Descrição: It is not only because of the strongly increasing amounts of plastic wastes and sewage sludge, that these wastes are becoming serious problems in our industrialized society, but also because the currently employed disposal methods, incineration and deposition, are not satisfying from an ecologic point of view. The quite well-known process of pyrolysis in a fluidized bed reactor is now investigated as a disposal method for these wastes. It has been found that the new method offers a variety of advantages. The volume of the wastes is drastically reduced, while the toxic heavy metals are fixed up in the solid residue, which can be deposited safely. The pyrolysis produces valuable chemicals, e.g. aromatics, and it is possible to run the process self-sustaining.
