  • Descrição: Introduction: the dramatic description of the unhealthy situation that Cuban people lived before the revolutionary triumph and the subsequent evolution of health inspired the idea of Commander Fidel Castro, of creating a different doctor and a new specialist who would help achieving better status of health and increase the level of satisfaction for the population. Objective: to describe the role of Fidel Castro as the founder of community medicine in Cuba, its impact and perspectives. Methods: a study based on the materialist-dialectical method was developed due to its capacity to integrate the qualitative and quantitative and to determine the system of methods. Theoretical and empirical methods were applied. Among the first: historical-logical, analysis-synthesis and on the second one: induction-deduction; as well as the documentary review. Development: Cuban Public Health System has the privilege of counting on a Centennial Generation, led by Fidel and succeeded by Raúl, in terms of dedication, example, solidarity and eagerness to seek and resolve the causes of problems. Today it has the new generations of health workers who follow their teachings for the development of health system and well-being of citizens, not only in Cuba, but also all over the world, as manifested in solidarity grants, missions and collaborations in other countries, the development of health research and academic training. Conclusions: Fidel Castro developed the creation of the family doctors, whose foundation was a devotion in order to assist the sick people and to promote health using preventive medicine, setting the standard in the historical evolution of world public health; this perspective supports the doctrine that a better world is possible. Introducción: la dramática descripción de la situación de insalubridad que vivía el pueblo cubano antes del triunfo revolucionario y la evolución posterior de la salud inspiró la idea del Comandante Fidel Castro, de crear un médico diferente y un nuevo especialista que contribuyera a alcanzar mejores niveles de salud e incrementar el nivel de satisfacción poblacional. Objetivo: describir el papel de Fidel Castro como fundador de la medicina comunitaria en Cuba, su impacto y perspectivas. Métodos: se desarrolló un estudio sustentado en el método dialéctico materialista por su capacidad de integrar lo cualitativo y lo cuantitativo y de determinar el sistema de métodos. Se emplearon métodos teóricos y empíricos. Entre los primeros: histórico-lógico, análisis-síntesis e inducción-deducción; entre los segundos la revisión documental. Desarrollo: la Salud Pública cubana tiene el privilegio de haber contado con la Generación del Centenario, liderada por Fidel y sucedida por Raúl, en cuanto a dedicación, ejemplo, solidaridad y afán de buscar y resolver las causas de los problemas. Hoy cuenta con las nuevas generaciones de trabajadores de salud que siguen sus enseñanzas por el desarrollo de la salud y el bienestar de los ciudadanos, no solo en Cuba, sino del mundo, como se manifiesta en ayudas solidarias, misiones y colaboraciones en otros países, el desarrollo de la investigación en salud y la formación académica. Conclusiones: Fidel Castro desarrollo la creación de un médico cuyo fundamento fuese devoción al enfermo y prevención de salud, marcando pauta en el devenir histórico de la salud pública mundial, cuya perspectiva funge a la doctrina de que un mundo mejor es posible.
