Descrição: The first hydroelectric plant in Brazil was built in the industrial state of Minas Gerais, in southwest Brazil in 1889. It was a 252kW power plant, which provided electric power for public lighting for the town of Juiz de Fora. Now Brazil is the second largest hydropower producer in the world with presently (2009) 517 hydroelectric projects in operation and an aggregated installed capacity of 78218.4MW. This chapter describes the main hydroelectric projects, Itaipu, presently the second largest hydroelectric generating installation in the world, Tucurui, Madeira Complex, Uruguay River, and Belo Monte projects. For each hydroelectric power plant, details of layout, dam, spillway, and powerhouse are provided.
