Descrição: Among the stages of the construction process, that of design is a criticai one. Although it is responsible for a small part of the total cost of construction (around 3%), it is considered one of the main causes of defects. It is during this stage that 70 to 80% of the total cost of construction are established. This paper intends to systematize the references about improving the quality of project management, and especially, by means of a multiple case study, to assess how such procedures are being adopted by the construction industry of the cities of São Paulo and Porto Alegre. Thus, the paper identifies the current stage of the design process in the construction companies under analysis, as well as some characteristics that differentiate these companies.
