  • Descrição: The text discusses Chibatal Joäo Cándido e a revolta que abalou o Brasil (2008), the graphic novel by Hemeterio and Olinto Gadelha, which documents the uprising of Afro-Brazilian sailors in the early twentieth century. Though the text posits an account of events and the documenting of injustice, mainly personified in the ill treatment awarded to the narrative's main character, in reality, the novel serves as accomplice of the national cultural establishment, so eager to make use of the past to redeem itself from responsibilities in the present. Within this context, this graphic novel is a key example of cultural production that, pretending to advance an agenda of Latin American racial interests, in fact inhibits its corresponding problematization.
