Der Aufweis grundlegender Ambivalenzen oder das Nebeneinanderstellen von Ermöglichungs- und Verhinderungsbedingungen charakterisiert Habermas’ kritische Interventionen zum Verhältnis von Sprache und Kommunikation, Politik und Kommunikation und Vernunft und Religion. Er ist damit nicht nur ein normativer Denker, sondern auch ein Diagnostiker gesellschaftlicher Komplexität. On the occasion of the 90th birthday of Jürgen Habermas and the appearance of his new major book, a general assessment of his work is made. It shows that his work contains not only the sum of theoretical propositions and political positions, but also a certain theoretical style. It consists of pointing to fundamental ambivalences and reflecting on the multiple conditions of possibility and impossibility of a wide range of phenomena. Habermas’s suggestions concerning language, communication, politics, reason and religion exemplify this gesture. He can be read not only as a normative theorist, but also as a thinker of social complexity.
