Descrição:
George Buchanan's Baptistes (1577) represents a complex model of classical reception in which the literary and political connections between early modernity and Greek antiquity are deeply enmeshed. The relationship between Buchanan's drama, contemporary political polemics, and Euripides challenges us to understand reception and translation in nonlinear terms, as processes that are continuously mediated by networks of texts and writers that span both the literary and political realms. Reading Buchanan's Baptistes in terms of an intertextual knot demonstrates the imbrication of literary and political nodes of reception and translation, as well as the myriad ways in which the forms, figures, and lexical echoes of Greek tragedy were reshaped by gendered ideas of early modern power. Here, Devlin examines the critical issues presented by Buchanan's Baptistes: that of its relationship to Buchanan's more famous political theory, and that of its long-contested allegorical relationship to contemporary politics.
