Descrição:
Corning's Advanced Fiber Products department has developed a high-performance bend-resistant fiber which is useful for tethered weapons (fiber-optic guided missiles, FOG-M), remotely-piloted vehicles (RPVs), microcables, and fiber optic sensors. The Corning Payout fiber is a step-index single-mode fiber which is designed with a highly doped core region and a smaller core diameter than standard telecommunication fibers. This specialized bend-resistant fiber requires that the refractive index Delta (the difference between the refractive index of the core and that of the cladding) is increased in order that the mode-field diameter is reduced and the cutoff wavelength is maintained near the operating wavelength. Corning's vapor-deposition fiber manufacturing process produces reduced diameter fiber without sacrificing performance by depositing less cladding material, decreasing the total diameter without modifying the core region. Using the mandrel wrap test and lateral load test, the effects of macrobending and microbending on the Corning Payout fiber were measured and its performance is illustrated in graph form. 1 ref.--J.M.
