  • Descrição: This chapter analyses the financial relationship between the city of Antwerp and its princes during the fifteenth century. City and ruler were connected by financial ties of taxation and credit relations, which in turn involved the granting of privileges and financial autonomy to city. At the same time, there were regular power struggles between the city and the prince, or between the city government and parts of the population concerning the privileges and civic rights. During the reign of the dukes of Burgundy, and the regency of Maximilian of Habsburg, these conflicts led to a major urban revolt in Flanders and Brabant, during which Antwerp was almost the only city to take the side of Maximilian. The affinity of the urban power elite with the Archduke can be explained by the socio-economic profile of Antwerp as a port city and a internationl market, and the favorable perspective of inheriting the position of Bruges. The absence of a predominant textile industry and powerful craft guilds in the city government tipped the balance in favor of a loyal position instead of joining the revolt. Antwerp invested heavily in the politics and wars of their rulers, but would be rewarded by a series of highly profitable privileges making the city the major center of commerce and finance of the Low Countries for the century to come.
