Descrição: The magnetic circuit conditions in a system comprising a component with a hardened surface layer and an electromagnetic probe are analysed. An expression is derived for the depth of magnetization induced by an electromagnet with coaxial poles placed on the surface. Test data are included on probes developed for testing the depth and hardness of HF-hardened surface layers on engine crankshaft pins. 14 ref.--AA
