  • Descrição: A most simple method for effecting this process is practised at the Iron works in Staffordshire, as well as at some of those in Scotland and Wales. It consists in spreading the ironstone intended for calcination over a bed of coal about a foot in thickness, adding occasionally a layer of small coal, until a heap is raised about eight or ten feet in height, and fourteen or fifteen in diameter, the fire is then lighted, and the operation left to itself without any further attention.
