  • Descrição: Language is a crucial tool for communication and is the voice of a cultural community. Different languages are designed to meet the communication needs of different cultures. During the era of colonialism in East Africa, the need arose for a single language--in education in particular--in all countries of the British colonies at the time, namely Tanganyika, Kenya, and Uganda. Kiswahili was officially adopted as the teaching language in schools, so that there would be one way of speaking and writing in East Africa. Between 1930 and 1964 there existed the Inter-territorial Language Committee for the purpose of promoting the standardization and development of Kiswahili. In recognition of the fundamental importance of collaboration in Kiswahili for political, economic, social, educational, cultural, and technological development, as well as the lingua franca of the East African Community, the partner states of Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda agreed in 2001 establish a corporate body to be known as the East African Kiswahili Council.
