  • Descrição: With ancient roots as instruments of navigation and spatial understanding, maps have changed markedly since the fifteenth century in information content, graphic symbols and format, and societal impact. The most recent changes reflect the emergence of overhead imaging and dynamic displays. In addition, the scholarly study of map history has evolved from its late nineteenth‐century fascination with famous firsts and artistic embellishments to the critical analysis of mapping as a useful but sometimes problematic tool for scientific investigation, territorial conquest, economic development, and governmental administration. These changes are reflected in the emergence of history of cartography as a rubric for both a vigorous interdisciplinary scholarly endeavor and the series of comprehensive reference books initiated by J.B. Harley and David Woodward and published by the University of Chicago Press.
