  • Descrição: This chapter investigates changes in the use of (semi-)modal verbs in Australian, NZ and British parliamentary records (the Hansard), in the period 1901–2015. Parliamentary speeches and debates, as a form of political discourse, rely strongly on linguistic resources that allow speakers to express their stance in relation to a particular proposition, thereby attempting to influence the listeners’ attitude towards that proposition. One linguistic resource to accomplish this is modal verbs (see Vukovic 2014). Modal verbs are subject to ongoing change (Mair 2006; Leech et al. 2009) that results in differences between varieties of English in terms of frequency but
