In recent years two cases of ‘religious offence’ have come into prominence in Burmese public debate.¹ In both cases the accused were found guilty of offending Buddhism and sentenced to prison and hard labour. Both cases were passed after strong mobilisation by a recent Buddhist monastic organisation called the MaBaTha (an acronym for Ah-myo Batha Thathana Saun Shaunq Ye a-Pwe, or the Organisation for the Protection of Race and Religion).
