Fluorinated beta -diketones as new extractants for heavy metals were studied. The extraction characteristics of 1,1,1,2,2,-pentafluoro-6-methyl-3,5-octanedione, expressed by log K sub D (HA), pK sub ex and log K sub D (MA sub n ) values, have been determined. The data were obtained by following the process of distribution of the diketone and the chelates of Cu(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) in the system water-p-xylene by methods of UV spectrophotometry and atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The effect of the five fluorine atoms in the beta -diketone molecule on the extraction characteristics is discussed and compared with that of trifluoro analogue.
