  • Descrição: the discovery of prophetic texts by the 5th crusade in Damietta in 1220 is mostly studied in relation with the quest for Prester John, with whom the crusaders sought an alliance from 1221. This paper goes back to the text first source, the Arabic Apocalypse of Peter in order to explain the prophecies in their original African and Nilotic context. The apocalyptical texts must therefore be understood as an attempt, probably made by some members of the Coptic community, to introduce the Franks in the balance between Ayubids, Nubians and Ethiopians, deeply modified in the beginning of the 13th century.
