  • Descrição: Drawing on fieldwork conducted in 2000-2001 (consisting of interviews with customs officials, border guards, questionnaires completed by commuters, & independent analysis), the motives for & consequences of migration across the Schengen into the European Union by Slovenians (& Croatians) for the purpose of work are discussed: more than 14,000 Slovenians & approximately 2,500 Croatians cross the Slovenian borders with Austria & Italy for work (8,000 Slovenians to Italy; 6,000 to Austria). Primary crossing points are Gornja Radgona, Sentilj, Karavanke, Miren, Fernetici, Skofike, & Kozina; crossings are more common in spring & fall due to seasonal labor opportunities. Commuters tend to work in domestic & agricultural labor markets, but also staff white-collar positions -- the latter category has increased in recent years. Concluded that this cross-border commute is an important phenomenon in the region, with ramifications for socioeconomic, spatial, demographic, & ethnocultural evolution. 1 Table, 22 References.
