  • Descrição: O termo nova ideia de museu �� amplamente empregado na historiografia dos museus de hist��ria natural. Entretanto, existe uma falta de consenso quanto ��s ideias abrangidas pelo conceito e, em alguns casos, houve a desconex��o com seu autor e sua origem. Por outro lado, a nova ideia de museu representa uma s��ntese sobre alguns t��picos da reforma que essas institui����es passaram no s��culo XIX elaborada por um de seus personagens centrais. Este artigo buscou elucidar a complexidade do termo em seu contexto de formula����o original, no discurso do naturalista William Henry Flower (1831-1899), na reuni��o da Museums Association, em 1893. Ao faz��-lo, esperamos avan��ar no conhecimento mais preciso acerca das ideias do per��odo e seus diversos autores. Buscamos igualmente lan��ar luz sobre como os naturalistas do s��culo XIX superaram os desafios e aproveitaram as oportunidades oferecidas aos museus, legando-nos um novo modelo institucional. Revisitar o s��culo XIX, e seu rico processo de reflex��o museol��gica, contribui tamb��mpara nossa reflex��o quanto aos novos desafios dos museus de hist��ria natural no s��culo XXI, mostrando que alguns aspectos que pareciam garantidos na ��poca; como a pesquisa e a salvaguarda do acervo, hoje; merecem nossa aten����o especial. O modelo de institui����o que nos foi legado sofreu profundas adapta����es, estando a servi��o de um n��mero cada vez maior de cidad��os na produ����o de conhecimento relevante, na educa����o e na comunica����o.
    The term new museum idea represents a synthesis on some topics of the reform that these institutions went through in the 19th century elaborated by one of its central thinkers. This study sought to elucidate the complexity of the term in its original formulation context, in the speech of the naturalist William Henry Flower (1831-1899) in the Museums Association���s meeting, in 1893. In doing so, we hope to advance in the more precise knowledge regarding the ideas of the period and its diverse actors. We also seek to shed light on the 19th century naturalists who resolved the challenges and took on the opportunities for museums, bequeathing us a new institutional model. Revisiting the 19th century, and its rich process of museological reflection, also inspires us to tackle on the new challenges of natural history museums in the 21st century, showing that some aspects that seemed guaranteed at the time, such as research and safeguarding of the collection, now deserve our special attention. The model of institution bequeathed to us underwent profound adaptations, serving an increasing number of citizens in the production of relevant knowledge, education, and communication.
