  • Descrição: INTRODUÇÃO Obesity can contribute to coexistence of vitamin deficiency and changes in glucose metabolism. Serum 25(OH)D is inversely associated with clinical and laboratory measures of adiposity and glucose levels in adults and adolescents. However, studies examining this relationship are limited and have provided inconsistent results. OBJETIVOS The aim of this study was to assess the association between body composition and glucose and insulin levels on serum 25-hydrovitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration in adolescents. METODOLOGIA A subsample of 1009 adolescents (470 males; 46.8%) from the HELENA cross sectional study with an age range of 12.5 to 17.49 years was analyzed. Fasting blood samples were taken and analyzed for concentrations of 25 (OH)D , glucose and insulin levels. Body composition parameters (BMI, fat mass, fat free mass) were obtained by bioimpedance (TANITA Corp). Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS software, version 22.0. The level of significance was set at P<0.05. RESULTADOS Only 18.9% of adolescents were vitamin D sufficient, the mean of 25(OH) D was 58.7 ± 23.0 nmol/L. Controlling by age there was a negative correlation between serum 25(OH)D and Glucose(r=- 0.10; p=0.01) and Insulin (r=- 0.13; p=0.001), but only in girls. Fat free mass ( 46.8 vs 45.6 kg) and waist circumference (72.9 vs 71.1 cm) were difference between vitamin D status (both p<0.05). Those adolescents in the lower fat mass tertile had higher concentrations of 25(OH)D (p=0.046). BMI(p= 0.000), body fat mass (p= 0.001) and waist circumference (p= 0.002) were significantly lower in vitamin D sufficient adolescents, but only in boys. The linear regression with vitamin D as dependent variable revealed that age ( β=0.13 p= 0.002), insulin ( β= -0.15 p= 0.000) and fat free mass ( β=0.11 p= 0.01) were independently associated with 25(OH)D concentrations.
The vitamin D concentration was negatively correlated com glucose levels. Furthermore, the body composition may play an important role on vitamin D concentration, but further studies need to evaluate this influence and its implications in the obesity. CONCLUSÃO The vitamin D concentration was negatively correlated com glucose levels. Furthermore, the body composition may play an important role on vitamin D concentration, but further studies need to evaluate this influence and its implications in the obesity
