  • Descrição: Visualisation of scientific and engineering data has advanced extensively in recent years. The number and variety of applications have grown with it, as did thedemands on the visual presentations to cope with the complexity, dimensionality and variety of information to be analysed, and the number of different techniques for data display and interaction. Yet a number of problems remain unsolved in the field of visual data presentation. Methods are not sufficiently effective tohighlight all the important aspects of the objects under analysis. There is a limit to what can be generated and to what can be interpreted at once. This thesisapproaches the problem of using sound to represent information in visualisation applications by studying and highlighting aspects of sound perception and cognition in the design of sonic structures to map data and graphics. The use of both musical and everyday hearing are considered and their advantages and disadvantages discussed for different types of information and analysis tasks. A frameworksis presented for sonic design of graphical information in the light of visualisation of surfaces represented independently as well as in the context of volume visualisation
