  • Description: The article reviews the initial trajectory of Roberto Schwarz’ “mispla ced ideas” the- sis, with the purpose of addressing two issues that are derived from it – first, whether the thesis can be regarded as a historiographic paradigm, capable of in- forming a history of literature (in Brazil but also elsewhere); second, to identif y the thesis limits, considering the current de- bate in Brazilian historiography, which departs from the views of Brazilian history that animated the Schwarzian creation, especially the view of Caio Prado Júnior. The article finishes with a synthesis of the original thesis, from a new angle, and a synthesis of the limits that were detected in the thesis, which contradict the general- izing (“universalizing”) vocation of the thesis and are center of the difficulties of the generalizability of the “misplaced ide- as” thesis beyond the Brazilian 19th cen- tury. O artigo historia a trajetória inicial da tese das “ideias fora do lugar”, de Ro- berto Schwarz, com vistas a discutir duas questões que dela são derivadas – primeiro, se a tese teria forças para ser tomada como um paradi gma histo- riográfico, capaz de informar uma his- tória da literatura (no Brasil, mas não só nele); segundo, que limites tem ela, considerando o debate mais recente da historiografia brasileira, que se afasta muito das visões de história do Brasil que animaram a criação schwarziana, em particular a de Caio Prado Júnior. Ao final, procura expor uma síntese da tese original, de um ângulo novo, e outra dos limites que este artigo detec- ta na tese, os quais contradizem a sua vocação generalizante (“universalizan- te”) e estão no centro das dificuldades da generalizabilidade das “ideias fora do lugar” para além do século 19 bra- sileiro.
