  • Descrição: ABSTRACT The use of medicinal plants in rural environments is considered essential for the health of people, because some of these places are deprived of basic resources of public health, besides being an important source of local cultural knowledge. The current study aimed to carry out a social-environmental survey of the use of medicinal plants in communities from Salvaterra city-PA, as well as the implantation of a medical garden in a school for the development of educational practices in science teaching and related areas. 120 socio-cultural semi-structured questionnaires were applied to residents of the urban area from Salvaterra and in the rural at Joanes and Jubim communities of the respective municipality. The study revealed the importance of medicinal plants to residents, an important tool to support health, because it is from these herbal medicines that a large number of medicines used to treat primary health problems are produced in the region. The construction of the medicinal garden allowed a playful space, aiding in the teaching-learning process of students of the municipality.
