  • Descrição: This research aims to discuss mediation practices. Here, we understand mediation as practices of alterity and recognition of others and not as a legal-procedural instrument in the Brazilian law. The main goal of this work is to examine how mediation can contribute to social pacification and to the opening for intercultural dialogue in the context of the territorial conflicts, between the indigenous and small farmers in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Therefore, this research draws a brief outline of the indigenous peoples' situation in Brazil. It discusses the persistent contexts of marginalization and the violation of rights faced by the indigenous. After, it debates the tyrannies of the indigenous deterritorialization policies practiced by the State of Rio Grande do Sul throughout history. It finally interprets the mediation as a transformative instrument that provides an opportunity for intercultural dialogue and to social pacification as regards to the territorial conflicts involving the Indigenous and farmers. In the methodology, the study resorts to the bibliographic research method from deductive reasoning and the hermeneutic and critical/dialectical approach methods. The data analysis considers the adversities to be faced, such as: the difficulty of opening discussion, the lack of government officials' interest and the lack of civil servants training. Then, the research results show that mediation is an important tool for facilitating dialogue. Based on alterity and raising awareness, mediation allows us to break prejudices and stereotypes, as well as to understand the historical situation and the different contexts faced.
