Descrição:
People of all creeds in the Balkans perceived natural catastrophes as a punishment of God for the sins they believed to have committed. A crucial question was to what extent the faithful were permitted or able to resist God’s will, for instance by fleeing in case of an epidemic. It transpires that Christians and Muslims in the Ottoman Empire behaved very much in a similar way, both believing in the protecting or hailing force of prayer, but also resorting to flight. In the latter case, in line with the mental make-up of pre-modern man, flight was necessarily justified not with rational, but with religious arguments. In practice, however, it appears that coercive measures taken by the authorities as well as social conditions determined people’s behavior more decisively than religious considerations.
