  • Descripción: Mathematical ambassadorship was clearly in evidence in 1926 when AMS President George Birkhoff was asked to engage in a fact-finding mission in Europe for the Rockefeller-funded International Education Board (IEB).The IEB had been founded three years earlier in an effort to promote “science on an international scale” through individual traveling fellowships to Americans and others and, by the end of the 1920s, through grants for the construction and maintenance of strategically located scientific institutes such as Paris’s Institut Henri Poincaré.¹ The forty-two-year-old Birkhoff’s objective, on this his first trip abroad, was to assess the lay of the European mathematical landscape
