  • Descrição: Cultural map of Finland. Features schools - elementary schools, agricultural schools and community colleges - in 1897. Also shows political boundaries, cities, railways, bodies of water, drainage, coastlines and islands. Includes latitudinal and longitudinal lines, as well as a legend, bar scale and scale statement. Colored lithograph. Map is 59 x 41 cm, on double sheet 60 x 43 cm. Text presented in parallel Finnish and Swedish. Atlas öfver Finland, by Sällskapet för Finlands geografi [Suomen Maantieteellinen Seura]; published in Helsinki, 1899. Title translates to: Atlas of Finland. Bound in dark teal board with reinforced spine. Front cover has gilded title and coat of arms for Finland. Collation: 2° : [1-8], 9-12, [32] double leaves of plates. Volume comprised of a title page, editorial board list, preface, table of contents, statistical tables and 86 maps. Maps topics include topography, geology, soils, climate, forests, agriculture, water, minerals, economics, transportation, communication and history. Maps also show cities, railways, bodies of water, drainage, coastlines and islands. Some maps employ data visualization to convey information, such as on light houses and the illumination they produce. According to the preface from the 1910 edition, the volume was published because the 1899 edition "was so well received by the public in its own country and among the representatives of geographical science that continuing to work in the same direction appeared to the Society as an inalienable duty."
