  • Descrição: The author offers a critical analysis of the position of design in France, in the context of an exhibition on Patrick Jouin at the Centre Georges Pompidou. In most other European countries, and in America, museums developed an extensive programme of exhibitions on design with the intention of educating the public in design awareness; the museums carried out extensive research and documentation and produced very high quality displays. In France a long-standing academic division of art into major and minor disciplines resulted in design being considered as belonging to a technical culture, designated 'decorative art' and of less worth than fine art. The cultural domination of fine art contributes to the lack of literature dedicated to decorative arts, and the late development of design education, which still emphasises theoretical social science aspects. The Jouin exhibition, while a success in the number of visitors attracted, presented a confused picture of design as on the one hand, a collection of rarefied collector's objects, and on the other, objects which, although beautiful, were everyday exemplars of industrial design.
