  • Descrição: In the first report of the Geological Survey of the state of Ohio there is an account of erosion along the shore of Lake Erie in the vicinity of Cleveland. This is illustrated by a plate which includes a good section of a landslip on retrogressive circular failure planes. Since the report was published in 1838, this observation of the curved failure surfaces in clay slides antedates those of Logan (1842) and Collin (1846). The use of groynes for shore protection is suggested and the phenomenon of piping appears to be suggested.
