  • Descrição: In 1966, Robert Venturi published Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, which challenges the shibboleths of Modern architecture - among others, consistency, abstraction and history's irrelevance to the present. This Post-Modern period is characterised by a completely new attitude to the past which affects the design of new buildings but also the works that combine old and new buildings. The site's owner, the SESC (Serviço Social do Comercio), is a non-governmental organisation created in 1946 to provide employees with health care, cultural and sports activities. In 1974, the SESC commissioned architect Julio Neves to design a new centre in Sao Paulo, in the working-class neighbourhood of Pompeia. The project reused the empty Union Hardware warehouse and an adjacent police garage facility in the Little Tokyo neighbourhood of Los Angeles to provide 5,100sq m of exhibition space. The original building was built in 1958-59 and was designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill for Pepsi-Cola's Headquarters.
