  • Descrição: Jorge Semprun's long life (1923-2011) contains not only personal but also collective conflicts of identity. The main reference subjects of his work treat memory and reflection about identity. The vehicle used is the language as an area where you can discuss in order to understand in which world we live and to find out what kind of world is desirable. These discussions may produce perplexities not only about oneself, but also about collective aspects to which one belongs, either the link to a political line, or to one or various countries or even the European Union. But also they require reflexion, in a hegelian way, on how they have become, are and can evolve each of those areas. The irony which helps to keep the distance on oneself and the others goes together with the conviction that only thanks to the autonomy of the individual person, and to the use of the critical and dialectical reasons it is possible to resist the complacency with oneself and the seduction of the dogmatism of totalitarian systems or simple common places.
