  • Descrição: Institutional Economics and Economic Sociology are branches of knowledge that critically evaluate the limited assumptions of standard neoclassical economics (SNE) about economic action. Authors such as Douglass North, of the new institutional economics, and also Geoffrey Hodgson and Ha-Joon Chang, who share features of the old institutionalism of Veblen, seek to take into account institutions in economic analysis, thus overcoming the deficiencies of the SNE. Based on the new economic sociology, Mark Granovetter seeks to regard economic action as socially embedded through the concepts of ties and social networks, in an attempt to overcome the limited understanding of individual action the SNE has. Given the fact that this proposal is common in the economic and sociological fields, this article intends to investigate the place of Granovetter's sociological approach in this debate.
