Descrição: This essay aims to identify aspects of homoeroticism in Machado de Assis's Dom Casmurro, by analyzing the way the novel constructs itself. In order to do so, the article analyzes the role of "scenes" in the novel-how the memorialistic narrative progresses through the evocation of scenes from the past, as staged in the narrator's discourse. It then sheds light on the nature of "jealousy"-a feeling central to the work-as well as the close relation between jealousy and homoeroticism. In addition, it tries to locate figurations of homoeroticism in other writings by the author (the short stories and chronicles). Finally, by drawing on Deleuze and Guattari's notion of "minor literature," it proposes that homoeroticism is present in three dimensions of Dom Casmurro: the representational, the existential, and the hermeneutic.
