  • Descrição: The author discusses representations of the favelas in Brazil. The first work broached in this chapter is Claudia Jaguaribe's ‘Rio – entre morros’, a series of photographs that showcase the city of Rio de Janeiro from a variety of unusual vantage points, often focusing on favela communities. Although not always immediately apparent, the majority of these images are digitally manipulated photo collages that create awe-inspiring visualisations of scenery in which natural and built elements compete to dominate the frame and terrain of the megalopolis. The photographs thus dialogue in a unique way with the cityscape as an imagined space, touching upon the fears, anxieties and desires that weave their way across it. In the second section, the author discusses Babilônia 2000, a film by one of the nation's most renowned documentarians, the late Eduardo Coutinho, set within the Morro da Babilônia favela on the eve of the twentieth century. Characterised by the director's particular interview-based style, the focus shifts away from a more common emphasis on the nature of truth and reality in documentary to privilege an understanding of the filmmaking process as, above all, an experience of encounter between different parties. An analysis of a diverse selection of images by photographers who have all historically worked within the Imagens do Povo collective, forms the basis of the final section of the chapter. Using works that have all been included in the collective's publication entitled Imagens do Povo (2012a), the author analyses the ways in which conventional limitations and borders are stretched in order to interrogate both stereotypical representations of espaços populares and the photographic medium itself.
