  • Descrição: The aim of this article is to offer a better understanding of the self-help literature, perceiving its appeals and meanings to the public. Two special moments in the history of self-help books are analyzed: the productions of New Thought authors and contemporary mentalists publications. We pay attention to the recurrence of the old topics of the American movement in the latest production, realizing that the idea of mind power, which was in the basis of the movement, remains strong and connected to individualism and the demands of contemporary society.
