  • Descrição: On the southern exterior side of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, on the right-hand side of the main entrance, there is a small decoration, which consists of two marble slabs--two cross-sections sliced from the same block of stone. They have been placed side-by-side so that their veins form a symmetrical pattern that resembles two birds sitting on a vase staring at each other. They are framed, like a picture, by four marble strips of a darker color. Visitors have described the birds as "magpies", "doves," "pigeons," and "roosters." In terms of the design scheme and history of the structure, this decoration stands out for six reasons.
