  • Descrição: [...]this collection treats periodicals not as "vehicles of certified knowledge," as Dawson and Topham state in their general introduction, but as means of composing and consolidating "communities of scientific practice" (3, 4). According to the approach pursued by all contributors, a key function of scientific periodicals was to enable those who actively made Victorian science, in the field or at the desk, in their own homes or in societies, clubs, and academic institutions, to see themselves as part of a more or less coherent group of like-minded individuals engaged in a common endeavor to further the production of knowledge in a specific domain. [...]the sheer number of periodicals on display here suggests that the work of Victorian science took place in a contested and ill-defined field explored by experts and amateurs alike.
