  • Descrição: Fatema Ahmed How to Talk About Books You Haven't Read by Pierre Bayard (Granta, £12) is not a self-help book for lazy book reviewers, but an entertaining essay on literature, anxiety and the canon, and the eighth instalment in the author's "Paradoxes" series. Rachel Aspden The Book of Dead Philosophers (Granta, £15.99) might sound rather grim Christmas reading, but Simon Critchley 's survey ofthe ends met by 190 great thinkers - from the Stoics and Epicureans through the Desert Fathers and Zen monks to Marxists and Existentialists - is concise, witty and oddly heartening. The controversy behind his peek into the Camorra mafia has inspired Nobel laureates to come to the book's defence since the mob granted the author a death threat with a Christmas deadline.
