  • Descrição: The anticipation of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro that Lower House Speaker Rodrigo Maia will be his potential rival is examined. On July 11, 2019, the 49-year-old politician from the center-right Democratas party pushed a revamp of the country's generous social security system past its first and highest legislative hurdle. Pension reform is a necessity that has eluded four previous administrations. A parliamentary base has been built by Maia which the government doesn't do and doesn't have. The speaker has embraced pro-market aspects of Bolsonaro's program but blocked some of the president's more inflammatory proposals, including a decree to loosen gun control laws. As the president squandered much of his political capital because of his belligerence and penchant for fighting culture wars, it gives Maia the opportunities in holding the country's democracy together.
