  • Descripción: If there ever really was a John Henry, his name was probably John Hardy. The steel-driving hero of America's classic folk ballad, John Henry,- has never been traced to a real-life person. But there was a John Hardy a gambler, a fighter, and a hard-drinking man handy with his fists and with a gun. After a gambling row at the Shawnee Coal Company, near Eckman, West Virginia, Hardy shot and killed a fellow worker. He was captured, tried, found guilty- and, on January 19th, 1894, John Hardy was hanged by the authorities until he was dead. In the wake of his passing, legends and myths and ballads grew.
