  • Descrição: No longer do journals require a wide enough subscription base to be sustainable.3 In the digital format, the major costs to sustain a journal come from fees for copyediting, web hosting and maintaining a peer review system.3 This has led journals to switch from a pay-to-read model to a pay-to-publish model in which authors pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) to journals for the publication of their work. [...]this pay-to-publish model has led to the rise of ‘predatory journals’, which accept authors fees and publish articles without performing appropriate quality checks, such as for plagiarism, ethical approval or rigorous peer review.6 Overview of the submission process The current process of submitting a manuscript begins with finding an appropriate journal. [...]once submission is complete, the process of peer review begins. The top reasons identified in this study included, but were not limited to: the study design/question does not move the literature forward, inadequate sample size, underdeveloped or poorly designed study, overinterpretation of results, poorly defined research question, irrelevant topic to the journal’s mission, insufficiency of the data being presented, inappropriate or unclear sampling method or research falling outside the scope of the journal.8 Other potential reasons for manuscript rejection may include recent publication of a similar article, or simply a lack of space, as it is not feasible for journals receiving such a large number of submissions to publish
