  • Descrição: The Tapiola swimming hall renovation and extension project in Espoo won an honorary mention in the Concrete Structure of the Year 2005 Competion for challenging architectural and structural design and for the implementation, in which concrete plays a significant part in the visible end-result. The concrete structures and surfaces are characterised by high quality and exposed details. The good properties of concrete have been taken advantage of in the structures and on wear surfaces. The structures and the architecture are to a large extent based on the plasticity and monolithic properties of concrete. The interior architecture in the extension part, in particular, relies on fairface concrete wall surfaces mirroring the vicinity of water as well as the variations of light and shade. Concrete surfaces create an atmosphere characterised by the very essence of the material.
