  • Descrição: Although the "Americanos" or "Indianos" are mythical figures in the economic & social history of Catalonia, in reality they make up a social group that is little known. Starting with the incontrovertible evidence that they played an important economic role in the development of the Principality, this work attempts to show how, in the course of the 19th century, these individuals adopted different investment strategies depending on the current economic situation & particular family circumstances. The categorical assertions that have traditionally been made as to the influence of the "Indianos" in the beginnings of the textile industry, particularly cotton, are qualified, & emphasis is placed on the undeniable role played by the capital of the returnees in the establishment of the public limited companies & limited partnerships that were created in mid-century in the banking, railroad, metallurgy, & navigation sectors.
