  • Descrição: In the public discourse on the development of capitalism in Poland, one of the threads consists of the call for a personality structure with flexibility replacing authoritarianism and self-direction replacing conformity to external authority. The present study examines two questions. First, has Polish society of the postcommunist era really become less authoritarian and more self-directed in its values than the Polish society of the state socialist era? Second, how effective is intergenerational transmission of self-direction vs. conformity and the transmission of authoritarianism in comparison to the previous period. To answer these questions I have analyzed data collected on fathers, mothers and their children in 1978/80 and 1993 utilizing LISREL methodology. The main findings are: (1) the level of self-direction in the generation of youth has grown comparing to the times of state socialism, but for the parents it has not changed; (2) the level of authoritarianism is now dropping both among youth and parents; (3) in the process of cross generation transfer of values and orientations the role of the father in relation to the mother has increased, but the general effectiveness of the cross generation transfer has declined. The paper examines also some group-based differentiation of these findings.
