For each, Technology Review has identified a researcher whose ideas and efforts both epitomize and reinvent his or her field. The technologies and researchers are: 1. universal translation and IBM's Yuquing Gao, 2. Synthetic Biology and Princeton University's Ron Weiss, 3. Nanowires and Peidong Yang of the University of California, Berkeley, 4. bayesian machine learning and Stanford University's Daphne Koller, 5. T-rays, and Toshiba's Don Arnone, 6. distributed storage and MIT's Hari Balkrishnan, 7. RNAi Therapy and Rockefeller University's Thomas Tuschl, 8. power grid control and ABB's Christian Rehtanz, 9. microfluidic optical fibers and University of Illinois physicist John Rogers, and 10. personal genomics and Perlegen Sciences chief scientific officer David Cox.
