  • Description: Essad Bey described his parents: "Father: oil industrialist; mother: radical revolutionary. I myself was destined to embody both tendencies and become a liberal capitalist. But it never happened."50 In Lev's memoir Der Mann, he wrote only one "spare... frigid thought... a ghostly echo," about his mother's influence on his life. "My mother brought me into the world -that's the only thing she did for me."51 Höpp's work provides the strongest, most objective research that has been carried out to date about Lev Nussimbaum / Essad Bey. Much of [Tom Reiss]'s description in The Orientalist (2005) is built upon Höpp's initial research. 6 Upon her divorce from Lev, his wife sought to officially reclaim her maiden name "Erika Loewendahl" from "Erika [Leo Nussimbaum Essad Bey]." Registered September 8, 1937, Book 980, Page 105. 37 Lev Nussimbaum obtained a certificate stating that he had converted to Islam on August 13, 1922, from religious representatives of what was then still the Ottoman Turkish Imperial Embassy States in Berlin. Tom Reiss, pp. 220-221, quoting Karl Hoffman, "Erdölsensationen" in Deutsche Rundschau, 57 (1930), 80.Upon his conversion, [Lev Nussenbaum], allegedly, took the name "Essad," which in Arabic means "Lion," just as his original name "Leo" did.
