  • Notas: This article was originally written in Russian and later translated by the authors into English. The authors’ English text has, subsequently, been subjected to extensive editorial modifications. We thank our friend and colleague Dr. R. P. Dhir who willingly helped us in finalising the legends of the figures. Because of the language barrier, necessitating handling of the article by various persons at various stages, and in view of the perpetual race against time, we are painfully aware that much literary deficiency is persisting in this final form of the article. We owe a special debt of gratitude to our Publishers, Dr. W. Junk B.V. for their understanding and cooperation in including this chapter even at the very late page-proof stage of the book. - Eds.
  • Descrição: The rodents are an integral component of the desert biogeocenose. Soviet zoologists have been conducting considerable research work on the rodent fauna of the U.S.S.R. for the last several decades. In this communication, we have made an attempt to collate the available information on the ecology of two groups of rodents of the Russian deserts, viz., the Jerboas and the Gerbils. Under every rodent species, as far as possible, we have included its distributional range, habitat preference, activity pattern, association and interaction with other rodent species, food, various aspects of reproduction, hibernation and predators. The species** which are included in this Chapter are: Family DIPODIDAE Subfamily GardiocraniinaeCardiocranius paradoxusSalpingotus crassicaudaSubfamily AllactaginaeAllactaga euphraticaA. elaterA. sibiricaA. majorA. severtzoviA. bobrinskiiAlactagulus pygmaeusPygeretmus platyurusSubfamily DipodinaeDipus sagittaScirtopoda telumJaculus turcmenicusEremodipus lichtensteiniParadipus ctenodactylusFamily MURIDAESubfamily GerbillinaeMeriones persicusM. vinogradoviM. tamariscinusM. blackleriM. unguiculatusM. meridianusM. libycusM. crassus zarudnyiRhombomys opimusThe arid zone of the U.S.S.R.
