Description: Ferguson writes that "an unconscious racism speaks to us from behind the mask of self-proclaimed abolitionist Christian virtue and sentimental, perfectionist humanitarisanism in popular abilitionist fiction." This article focuses on the ironic condition which existed in the first half of the 19th century in abilitionist fiction--wherein existed two categories of people which fit the definition of being outside the "holy circle" of God's grace: "evil" slaveowners because they were morally degenerate and black slaves simply because they were black.
