  • Descripción: AVERAGE EARNINGS OF MEN EMPLOYED IN THE METROPOLITAN AREAS ALMOST ALWAYS EXCEED THE EARNINGS OF WOMEN IN THE SAME OCCUPATION. THIS ARTICLE PRESENTS FIGURES BASED ON A SURVEY WHICH COMPARED MEN AND WOMENS WAGE LEVELS IN 8 OFFICE AND 2 PLANT OCCUPATIONS WITH SIGNIFICANT NUMBERS OF JOBHOLDERS OF BOTH SEXES. BASED ON DATA FOR ALL ESTABLISHMENTS, THE SIMPLE AVERAGE WAGE DIFFERENTIAL BY SEX FOR THE 10 OCCUPATIONS FAVORED MEN BY 18 PERCENT. THERE WAS NO CONSISTENT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE EARNINGS LEVEL OF AN OCCUPATION AND THE SIZE OF THE SPREAD IN AVERAGE EARNINGS BETWEEN THE SEXES. THIS ARTICLE REVEALS THE TREND EMERGING SINCE THE EQUAL PAY ACT WENT INTO EFFECT IN 1964. THE DIFFERENCE IN 1960 WAS 19 PERCENT ADVANTAGE FOR MEN, THIS DROPPED TO 18 PERCENT IN 1965 AND HAS REMAINED CONSTANT. THE SURVEY IS NOT DESIGNED TO DETERMINE WAGE DISCRIMINATION.
